Markham is writing Willism Crane and William Wheeler Crane's co-worker. They had sent Markham Graded Literary Readers for children. Crane and Wheeler had fine commentarties on The man with the Hoe. The Poem has had many requests because it appeared in their Readers. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
